KAREN THOMPSON WALKER ~ THE AGE OF MIRACLES ~ BOOK REVIEW

I've had a really lucky run lately of picking up books in pound stores and discovering that they are actually really good! It mystifies me how they come to end up on the cheap shelves when they are as well written as this one is!
The storyline fundamentally covers an 11 year old girls struggle with puberty and all the difficulty it brings. Julia is the narrator of this tale, but it is written as though she were now a woman looking back at her adolescence, remembering what it felt like to grow and develop at seemingly impossible speeds, to lose cherished friendships, to fall in love with a boy who seems oblivious to your very existence, and to lock away the worst secret that any child could be expected to keep!

Thrown into the mix is the news of the sudden slowing of the rotation of the Earth, and a scarily believable account of what could possibly ensue if this unthinkable phenomenon were to occur!

This book is a fascinating insight into altered behaviour and beliefs and human resilience , even in the face of what seems like the end of days!

As added extras at the back of the book, there are some Reading Group discussion questions and a wonderful insight into the author herself!

So far, this is Karen Thompson Walker's only novel. Fingers crossed there will be more to come!
